Squeeze play?

Hand 7

♥ 7                                               ♥ K1094
♦ K72                                           ♦ A104
♣ Q942                                        ♣ AK10

                              South

6 spades is mentioned as the only making slam here but we reached a lucky 6NT which can also make. I think north is squeezed in the red suits. However I tried leading to king first after a fortunate club lead and south didn't return a heart so squeeze came next. Odd no mention of 6NT? Is leading to king the best line or run back suits first?

  1. Think I would have played a heart to the king as well as it seems the best chance of making. As you found out you have a second chance even if it loses.

Not obvious for East to know that 6S is better than 6NT unless you can find out West has a heart singleton.

  2. As far as I can see, 6NT by East seems to make on a squeeze without the count. (I think that is what it is called!). On a spade lead, you must guess the clubs correctly, cash the ♦A and play spades. Before the last spade is led, the position is:

    W: ♠2 ♥7 ♦K7
    N: ♥QJ ♦QJ
    E: ♥K109 ♦10
    S: ♥A65 ♦5

North leads the ♠2. A diamond discard by North would establish ♦7. A heart discard would establish a heart trick in the East hand.
However, it seems unlikely that this play would be found at the table!

  3. If East plays 6NT, and South does not lead a heart, this increases the chance he has the ace. However, I would get the clubs wrong when I discover South has four spades and North one, so I would go off. And North should put in the jack of hearts, when it should be obvious for South to return one.

  4. East only has 12 cards, the D4 is missing. if East actually does have it doesn't it make 6S even worse as there is now no diamond ruff in the short hand?
